tion model and to the megadiscipline of media studies. Short case studies are provided of the emergence of print media in several African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Kenya and South Africa), with the South African analysis looking more in-depth at the political economy of print media in the context of post-apartheid ideologies. The article concludes by positioning media studies in Africa against western media studies, and media studies as a ‘megadiscipline’, the intention being to account for and explain some of the disparities between North—South media studies and print media economies." , and sustained commitment to building partnerships, collaborations and networks amongst African stakeholders, with linkages between these and their overseas counterparts, are two pivotal and necessary conditions to move Africa away from the global knowledge periphery. In her conclusions she states “bibliographies, whether in print, or online, are also tools to allow access to information. It is the pro-active, systemic, organized and strategic use of these tools that will determine the future of Africa’s moving closer to the centre of the global knowledge system. To be accessible in the information age, African journals must ensure they are available, visible and usable on the internet, most particularly through striving towards open access of African-published materials, such that Africans themselves can read context-specific, relevant work from their own continent. Role-players in the continent’s system of knowledge generation and dissemination hold the ultimate responsibility and moral burden to build on existing capacity through cooperation and collaboration. It is only by addressing the complex and multiple requirements at all levels that optimal use of opportunities will be attained and the African continent will be brought to prominence in the global knowledge system." Die Inhalte wurden für die Fortbildung von Fach- und Führungskräften der Partnerinstitutionen angepasst. Regionale Expertennetzwerke entwickeln es laufend weiter." ural industries in these countries. She examines a number of successful collaborative initiatives such as co-publication projects and training programmes, as well as collaborative ventures that unfortunately have failed for a number of reasons, such as the book marketing collective Afrilivres that aimed to provide a showcase for African books and serve as a distribution outlet both within Africa and in the countries of the North. The author offers a number of suggestions how the book sector might be revitalized and strengthened by support from ACP and EU States and the European Commission." (Hans M. ct for case study in the hope that an examination of the operations and dynamics of such a press would throw some light on the tensions inherent in the academic publishing exercise. It should be noted at the outset that UCT Press is unique among South African university presses in that it is owned by a private company – namely, Juta and Company Ltd. Private ownership of a university press which enjoys a close, synergistic relationship with its parent institution is not unique in the global academic context, but it does present interesting challenges in terms of commercial and non-commercial entities working side by side, often with very different markers of success."
