"The trade publishing sector in South Africa produces books primarily in English and Afrikaans, which is not representative of the spread of languages spoken in the country. In particular, there are very few books published for general readers in the local African languages. The Indigenous Language

Publishing Programme (ILPP) is a government-sponsored initiative that aims to improve this situation. This article assesses the impact and sustainability of the ILPP as an attempt to represent the official languages more equally in the publishing industry. Our study, based on an analysis of documents and interviews, found that the national language and book policies have not been well implemented, which is a failure in terms of reaching constitutional ideals. Moreover, despite the ILPP being an attempt at creating language equality, the initiative seems not to be sustainable because it is reliant on external funding. The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) is not willing to fund such a project on an ongoing basis, which puts the programme’s longevity at risk. As a result, the ILPP’s influence remains limited. The minority languages remain under-represented and this raises questions about whether there is in fact a viable market for books in all of the South African languages." (Resumo)

"Fuelled by the Arab Spring, the question of how the rise of internet-mediated communication affects authoritarian regimes has received unprecedented attention within the discipline of communications. However, in this debate, scholars have not yet turned to the concept of literacy and addressed the

role of citizens' knowledge about political media in any greater depth. This is surprising since the concept of literacy as 'emancipatory knowledge', in Sonia Livingstone's words, has a 'long and proud history' of being linked with processes of enlightenment, political empowerment and democratization. The present study contributes to filling this gap by suggesting four highly consequential facets of critical news literacy in contemporary Russia, a high-profile hybrid regime. The conceptual development is grounded in western literature and 20 in-depth interviews with young, urban and educated Russians." (Abstract)

is seen as a catalyst for social change. The case of Sierra Leone’s civil war shows that youth play an important part to make, strengthen or break a system. The young population in Sierra Leone have an strong impact in terms of peace building and peace keeping. A way to catch the youth’s interest is entertainment education. Radio is the most popular medium in this West African country; one reason is the high illiteracy rate. In order to reach the masses the local NGO’s SLADEA, Freetong Players International and Culture Radio decided to produce a radio drama which both educates and entertains its listeners." (Page 71)

ifacts. The first section of the chapter offers a historical trajectory concerning the study of youth and media. The second section proposes an explication of the concept of youth-generated media as developed by young people themselves, and juxtaposed to youth-oriented media. The third section proposes two broad conceptual approaches to youth-generated media: a “sponsored-development” approach with a relatively dominant adult involvement and an “organic” approach with youth taking charge of their own media production. The fourth section offers brief illustrative case studies from the Arab Spring. The chapter concludes by highlighting the utility of the concept of youth-generated media and the challenges in understanding and interpreting young people's activities." (Summary)

eater curriculum that follow were created for the USAID-funded Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) project. Since its launch in 2010, YTP has promoted sustainable conflict prevention at the community level through theater. YTP trained 284 youth and adults in conflict mitigation through the use of interactive theater in four conflict-affected regions of Kyrgyzstan. The result was the creation of 33 schoolbased drama clubs, which reached more than 50,000 audience members. Youth in the YTP program engage with each other and their communities through theater activities based on Drama for Conflict Transformation (DCT), a participatory theater methodology in which youth develop short plays based on conflict issues and present them to their communities in interactive performances." Specifically, media can influence girls’ aspirations and behaviours around their health and livelihoods, open the door to greater participation in society and ensure that girls’ issues move higher up the public agenda. If challenges around media access and control are addressed head on and girls come to be valued as an audience, then media can play a vital role in helping to advance the well-being of adolescent girls in regions of the world where their interests have traditionally been most neglected."
