The second section discusses the prevalence of chatting on MXit among adolescents and young people across all demographics in South Africa. The latter sections delve into an understanding of the behaviour of MXit users, including the reasoning behind the customary use of the phrase “Wots ur ASLR?” (What is your Age, Sex, Location and Race?). This paper is the beginning of an in-depth understanding of the digital behaviour and risks faced by MXit users, and may be used to inform future research in this regard." (Abstract)

ho rap or sing mostly in Swahili. This article explores this cultural phenomenon in the context of social upward mobility. From its very beginning, Bongo Flava has been regarded as a mouthpiece for the youth and the ordinary people. At the same time it has always been seen as a means to escape poverty and to achieve a better life. The narrative of the meteoric rise is derived from American Hip Hop imagination, as well as from local success stories. However, there are many players in the field of Bongo Flava with whom the aspiring artists have to cope. These include studios, producers, distributors, radio presenters, the press, the audience etc., but also their fellow artists from other crews and formations. This article looks at the social side of Bongo Flava, the bonds that are built, developed, or, eventually, broken up, as well as larger networks that exist between the artists and other players in the field, and the ways the artists use them for their goal of making their way up. It also examines how the artists cope with difficulties such as corruption, jealousy and greed in their social lives. It is argued that the experience acquired in the field of Bongo Flava can be seen as a form of capital that can be employed for other purposes too. This includes experiences with studios, the media, as well as stage experience and selfpromotion. However, it is also shown that gatekeepers in the radio and TV have a strong influence on artists' success, often disadvantaging the career path of independent artists, at least those with little financial resources. The study is based on field research in Tanzania from 2001 to 2011." (Abstract)

Youth Voice is a youth-focused magazine combining a variety of components, including talkback show, music, news and personal stories. The program is aimed at younger people aged between 15 and 24. To assess the extent to which the Youth Voice and the Light of the Region have achieved their objectives and to make further necessary improvements to the programs, this qualitative audience evaluation was conducted using eight Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) in the Provincial City of Battambang and Moung District of Battambang Province. The two programs are overall well received by their listeners except a few downsides expressed by some of the participants in the FGDs." (Executive summary)

media formats such as blogs, text messaging and podcasting. Political socialization measures were indices of political trust and appraisals of the US government. Results suggest that young Jordanians in the sample rely mostly on TV news, newspapers and interpersonal contacts for current events information, and that TV news use and reliance on interpersonal sources were associated with negative views of the US government." tray in other kinds of media. Although games are an excellent medium for many types of storytelling, their interactivity makes them far different from more traditional media such as books and film. Interactive stories themselves havemany unique and challenging issues that aren’t encountered when writing a more traditionally structured tale, which we’ll be discussing all throughout the rest of this book. Game writers also need to think about many other factors, such as the synthesis between the story and gameplay and how to maintain a proper pace when the story’s progression is, at least to a certain extent, controlled by the player." They are disappointed about not having their voices heard by political and civil society leaders, yet optimistic about their role in shaping the future of their country. Yet, the same youth often cannot clearly define what national identity means to them." (Abstract)
