"This guide has been written for people in the UK public sector delivering online digital services who wish to research their audiences. Although it is focused on online digital services, it will also be useful for researching audiences reached via other channels. It is primarily aimed at non-expert

It is therefore likely to be most useful for people in small organisations / services, or those conducting small projects in larger organisations. It may also be useful for people procuring services who want to know what guidelines to provide, and for those setting policies." (Introduction, page 6)

(Seite 1)

l. The author, a former head of audience research for BBC World Service, combines the discussion of methods and cientific background with concrete examples in developing countries. Why is it important to train the interviewers? How to avoid mistakes by translating the questionnaires in indigenous languages? How to organize focus groups? How to interpret ratings? This publication is a gold mine of experience for anybody who needs to know more about his audience and to reflect on the own research practice." (CAMECO Update 1-2008)

"The first six chapters of this book give you the background information you need to understand how to do an audience survey to a high standard. The explanation is based on the standard face-to-face survey method, where trained interviewers speak directly to audience members. You can use the informa

tion in Part I in several ways: to organize your own survey, or to commission an expert to do a survey for you, and understand most of the decisions that they and you will face, or to help decide whether you need a survey, or some other type of research. If you are interested doing your own research, but after reading these six chapters you realize that it may be too difficult, slow, or expensive to complete a face-to-face survey, try Part II of the book, which describes some other types of survey, and several methods of qualitative research." inspiration to all who work and desire to see Africa succeed and to have its voice heard above the din of the new digital age. A financially robust African media that is also independent and pluralistic will serve to give meaning to and strengthen the continent’s nascent democracy and contribute to the lifting of its people out of grinding under-development, poverty and related ills. These media leaders, in sharing their stories with the rest of Africa and the world, show that the real test of what works and does not work in managing and leading a successful media firm too often lies in the field and at times does not necessarily follow orthodoxy." "This is a short, practically oriented and easy to understand guide through the different methods of audience research. It explains how and why audience research can contribute to the programming of local radio stations, and introduces the basics of quantitative research (ie, sampling, writing a que

stionnaire, etc.) and qualitative research (ie, in-depth interviews, consensus groups and others) with a focus on practical implementation for local radio stations in developing countries. Furthermore, it contains several check lists for those who want to examine their audiences, but are unsure which method is most suitable, or if they are able to carry out the research themselves or should commission an external researcher. On a whole, this is a good manual for beginners to learn more about the use, need, methods and impact that audience research can offer." (commbox)

perspectives on issues such as localism, funding and sponsorship, Indigenous and ethnic programming and training. A key criticism of this report was the lack of data on community radio audiences. Two years later, an expanded research team received funding from the Australian Research Council along with financial and in-kind support from Department of Communication, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA), the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF) and the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) to investigate community radio and television audiences. This project is the first comprehensive qualitative audience study of the community media sector in Australia and responds to a need within the sector, from policy bodies and the broader Australian community, to better understand community broadcasters and their diverse audiences. Internationally, this project, in both scale and approach, is unprecedented. Thus, it heralds an exciting and pioneering stage in community broadcasting research. This paper outlines the aims and objectives of the project and our methodology for accessing Australian community media audiences. A qualitative engagement with the diversity of audiences characteristic of the community media sector has demanded new ways of doing audience research. This paper discusses some of the methodological hurdles we have crossed in our attempts to negotiate the research terrain and we raise some of the questions associated with the qualitative method and assert its validity and portability as a tool for better understanding and knowing the nature and composition of community media audiences in Australia." And is there a link between television viewing and violent behaviour? Researching Audiences is a practical hands-on guide to the main types of empirical fieldwork that have established themselves in academic, policy and commercial research. It will help you explore what audience members do with the media, how they make sense of the media, and how the media may influence social affairs from the micro to the macro level. The book introduces and discusses four complementary key approaches to empirical research: Media ethnography, reception research, survey research, and experimental research." (Publisher description)
