of the design thinking involved at each stage of the design process: the methods used by designers to generate and refine creative ideas, the key considerations that help shape them and the feedback and review elements that allow design teams to learn from each job and contribute to future commissions. Through detailed studies of contemporary work and analysis of the basic theories, we examine how a designer can generate and resolve ideas to produce creative solutions that best meet the stated aims of a brief." all sectors to address disaster related issues. Awareness campaigns should be conducted for the initiation of comprehensive disaster risk management. The mass media has to raise its voice on the frequency and intensity of disasters, vulnerabilities, risks, rights, and responsibilities and shape mainstream disaster risk reduction (DRR) programmes into development efforts. The disaster management (DM) cycle should be considered while news and information are collected. Voices of affected communities need to be captured and experts consulted. Information should be provided capturing the voices of communities, experts, civil societies, and government authorities. To make information more accessible, programmes should be catchy, attractive, and entertaining. When does a particular disaster occur? What possible impact can it have? Which community and economic class is eff ected? What are the causes? Such questions and issues have to be considered while preparing reports and terminologies have to be accurate. Media personnel can also focus on disaster preparedness and possible disaster risk reduction measures." (Executive summary)

"This handbook is to help journalists working in war zones. There is no magic way to avoid a rocket attack or an ambush, but the tips here are based on common sense (which is too often ignored) and should help many journalists solve a lot of problems. ations and ethics charters from all over the world, including the African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Interamerican Convention on Human Rights, the Munich Charter on journalists’ rights and duties and journalists’ codes of conduct in Mali and in the US. As well as these broad documents, we also reprint practical advice such as that which the BBC gives all its journalists before they leave on dangerous assignments. We have also added (courtesy of the French defence ministry’s office of information, DICoD) the rules for self-protection given to French soldiers facing dangerous situations (riots, snipers, kidnappings, ambushes, roadblocks) and, when these precautions fail, what to do immediately to save the wounded and injured. There have been two additions to the 2010 edition of the handbook: very specific recommendations on the role of the media in humanitarian and public health emergencies and practical advice, drafted in cooperation with the Dart Centre, for coping with post-traumatic stress." nalists writing about religion with accuracy, balance and insight. The Stylebook includes entries on: The major religions, denominations and religious organizations journalists often encounter; Preferred spellings, capitalizations, some definitions and usage guidelines for religious terms; Accurate titles for religious leaders in different traditions; Selected pronunciation guides; Entries on terms used in stories on current topics in the news, such as abortion and homosexuality; Entries on religion terms that are not included in The Associated Press Stylebook. What it is not: This stylebook is written for journalists. As such, it is not a dictionary or encyclopedia of religion. Many religious terms are not included; This guide addresses the most common style-related concerns in today’s newsrooms. Some definitions and explanations are included to help journalists with the proper use of terms; Religion is not an exact science. Many religious terms are hotly debated. Translations into English of Arabic, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Pali and other languages create many alternative spellings, even within a tradition; After extensive consultation and research, we’ve selected the style guidelines that are recommended by other authorities or that make the most sense as we seek to encourage accuracy and credibility in the journalism profession." "The guiding principle behind the development of this tool has been to produce a ‘user-friendly’ resource for journalism educators who want to include what we might term as ‘anti-discrimination or human rights awareness’ dimension into their teaching. To that end practical exercises which ar

e easily adaptable and transferable in terms of context and duration have been collected, and are presented here in a brief and “jargon free” manner. The main aim is that these exercises be read, used, adapted and integrated into current teaching practice. In addition, it was taken for granted that all teachers and academics are familiar with the media culture within which they operate and, therefore, this toolbox does not include specific information of that nature. What is included is a selection of links to relevant European codes and laws. This is to help bolster students’ understanding of the importance given to human rights and anti-discrimination at European level and to provide the relevant sources of information for investigating the legal frameworks. The bulk of the content comprises teaching examples. These have been used by tutors in a variety of situations. For the most part, they have been taught to journalism students at Universities and Colleges, but some techniques have also been applied in-service with media professionals." Aware that the Roma community is not always treated fairly in the media in other countries either, we decided to translate and publish this guide in English with the support of the Spanish Council for the promotion of equal treatment and non-discrimination for reason of racial or ethnic origin, in light of the special interest of media professionals at international level."
